Prosthetic Leg Breakaway Device

For my Advanced Mechatronics Class, I worked on a team of three to design and create the leg breakaway device shown to the left.

This device is intended to be used with osseointegrated prostheses. This device senses the forces applied to a prosthetic limb and quickly and reliably detaches the limb if the forces exceed a predetermined maximum.

To create this device, we used a MakerBot 3D printer, a ball-detent style locking mechanism, a network of strain gages, a high-force solenoid and the analog-to-digital converter of a PIC32.
